The Faculty of Painting prepares students for taking up artistic activity in the area of painting, in the following specialties: easel painting and mural painting, drawing, textile art and stage design. The didac­tic process is based on practical work in studios, and its aim is to develop students’ awareness of creative approaches combining centuries‑old heritage of painting with openness to contempo­rary challenges.

Many a distinguished artists studied painting and then became well known in Polish and world art. The list is quite large; let us then name only some of them, starting with Jan Matejko and his disciples: painter, poet and dramatist Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer and Jacek Malczewski. In the 20th century among distinguished graduates of the Academy there were Louis Marcousis, Moise Kisling, Tadeusz Makowski, painter and dramatist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (known as Witkacy), Jerzy Nowosielski, film director Andrzej Wajda, painter and theatre creator Tadeusz Kantor, painter Jan Szancenbach.

Stage design

Stage design is one of the specializations at the Faculty of Painting, but it is being thought as a separate degree course. Students get qualifications to work at the field of theatre, movie, television and opera, based on comprehensive: practical and historical preparation. Graduates are prepared to work as a professional stage designers, who skillfully use traditional workshop and modern forms of expression.
